You want to be able to change things for the better, so does the funder.
This short course will cover:
- Choosing appropriate funders.
- Demystifying the process.
- Clarifying your aims.
- Clarifying your outputs & outcomes and knowing the difference between the two.
- How to write a budget.
- How to tell a funder about you and your project effectively.
- What to expect WHEN you’re successful.
- How to develop a fundraising a strategy.
After the course Ed will provide an hour’s one-to-one support (by appointment at a time that’s convenient for you) to discuss an application that you wish to develop.

We provide training sessions on a wide range of different subjects that commonly affect community organisations such as:
- Governance – There are a number of different ways to create your community group. Some are simple but offer fewer legal protections, some are more complex but provide more security for those involved and expand your range of options for funding. We can help you understand the options available to you, consider the pros and cons of each and support you through the process.
- Finance – It is very important to keep good accounts of the money received and spent by an organisation. Your organisation must be able to show its members what happens to its money and, if it receives grants from funders, it must be able to show that it has spent such money properly. We can help you understand your financial reporting obligations, explore options for managing your organisations finances and design a finance policy that works for you.
- Fundraising – The key to the long term financial health of any charity or voluntary group is to avoid relying on single sources of income. We can help you understand how to expand your range of funders, how to prepare funding applications and develop good relations with potential funders.
- Business planning – Voluntary organisations and charities are required to be more publicly accountable and business-like than ever before. Funders and commissioners often require organisations to provide them with a business plan and as the challenges facing your communities change, your organisation needs to ensure that it is responding to changing needs and changing communities. We can train your trustees / directors on understanding the importance of regular business planning and how to embed planning reviews into how your organisation functions.
- Community Asset Transfer (CAT) – CAT presents local communities with the opportunity to breathe new life into public buildings, to preserve valuable community resources or develop exciting new services for local communities. A CAT can have far-reaching consequences however that could impact heavily on your organisation. We can provide training on how the process works, what sort of issues your organisation needs to consider and negotiating with statutory organisations such as local authorities.
- Statutory compliance and safeguarding – Everyone attending your organisations activities has the right to expect that:
- The activity will do them no harm
- Reasonable steps have been taken to minimise harm
- The activity has been planned and is supervised by people with the right qualifications and skills for the activity.
- We can provide advice and training on managing risk within your organisation. This includes health and safety requirements, fire safety requirements and safeguarding issues.
- Managing volunteers – Many different organisations use volunteers ranging from large national charities to small community organisations run solely by volunteers. Your organisation has a responsibility towards those volunteers to ensure that they are safe and supported in their roles. We can help you understand what those responsibilities are and how you can create rewarding, interesting opportunities for people in your community.
Training can be delivered face-to-face at your venue or ours. We can also provide all of our training online – all you need is a phone, tablet or computer and we’ll do the rest.
If your organisation requires training not listed above please drop us a line to see if we can help.
