Northenden Players Theatre Club

Founded in 1942, the Northenden Players have been performing for the residents of Northenden (and beyond) for over 75 years.

Despite this, they had never had a permanent base. In 2019 however, the curtain rose on their new home at the site of the former Northenden Library.

The library was closed in 2013 due to council funding cuts and, despite a spirited campaign by local residents, remained empty as the elements took their toll on the site.

Working with their local councillor and CASC associate Steve Higgins (then Community Asset Transfer manager at Manchester City Council) a plan was developed to enable the group to take a long lease on the site and begin renovating and refitting the building for use as a theatre.

Working around the clock, the site was virtually rebuilt, utilities were reconnected and what had been set for demolition was brought back to life. A stage was built, seating for up to 60 people added along with a foyer and bar area and a sound / lighting booth.

The first production, Harold Brighouse’s “The Game” took place in March 2019 and productions have continued since.

The site has become not only a permanent home to beloved local project but a beacon to communities and community organisations across Manchester, demonstrating how communities can come together and create their own spaces.
